New Jersey - New Baltimore, NY

Here is our route from Moonbeam Great Kills Marina, New Jersey to New Baltimore, NY.

Going up the Hudson River.

Monday, June 17. We left the Moonbeam Great Kills Marina just after 5:00 am to go 15NM to Liberty Landing Marina. Our idea was to beat the boat traffic as much as possible.

Verrazzano Narrows Bridge with NYC in the background.

Many Loopers coordinate taking photos of eachothers boat in front of the Statue of Liberty. We were the only pleasure boat passing by—our selfies from the bow didn’t quite work out — BUT here she is the Statue of Liberty taken as we passed by. Truly a gorgeous morning.

And here we are on land. We took the Ellis Island/ Statue of Liberty tour. Private boats are not aloud to dock.

Yep, this had to be done. : )

Getting back on the ferry on Liberty Island was challenging and hot—for everyone!

We took the ferry from Liberty Island to Manhattan and walked to the World Trade Center & the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. We wished we booked another day at the marina to spend the time needed to see all the exhibits. We both felt being in New York gave us a deeper understanding to the horror and helplessness of the people that were there that sunny Tuesday morning.

Knowing what we know now—we recommend the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and go when it first opens for the day.

We came back to the boat and realized there were no restaurants within walking distance to the marina. We were tired from the early start and heat so dinner was grilled tuna cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Not quite NY Pizza but it worked.

Tuesday, June 18. Our goal was to get up and out of Hudson Bay before the many commuter ferries start their day.

The statue is called “Water’s Soul” by a Spanish artist Jaume Plensa that depicts a woman with a finger to her lips. The way it faces the NYC skyline makes it seem like the woman is “shushing” the NYC skyline.  I googled it.

-More than 50,000 people use the terminal daily, making it the ninth-busiest railroad station in North America and the sixth busiest in the New York area. It is also the second-busiest railroad station in New Jersey, behind only Newark Penn Station

This is the -Hoboken Terminal is the last survivor of the great Hudson River (New Jersey) waterfront stations still serving in its original function. We dodged the many ferries that will come out of this terminal as the morning commute gets busier.

View of Manhattan is now behind us.

Fun fact: Name of the elementary school I attended was Manhattan Elementary in SeaTac, WA.

The evening was topped off with this sunset at Half Moon Bay, Croton-On-Hudson, NY.

Wednesday, June 19. We cruised by West Point-US Military Academy. Very impressive from the water.

The scenery drastically changes going up the Hudson. On the West side we saw alot of freight trains.

Esopus Meadows Lighthouse.

The is the Rondout Lighthouse. Our destination was the Rondout Yacht Club about a mile in from this lighthouse. Kingston, NY.

After docking at the marina, we dinghy’d back to Loose Moose and visited with Kathe and Bonnie. We originally met them coming down the Tennessee River last November! It was so nice to visit with them after so many months. They will be crossing their wake very soon—for more about their adventure they are on FB—Loose Moose on the Loop.

Thursday, June 20. We dinghy’d back to town and walked up to the highly recommended Half Moon Bay Coffee Shop. This is a cranberry orange muffin toasted. It’s delicious and apparently a thing in NY. I will always want my muffins this way from this point forward.

Really don’t like to complain but oh my goodness its HOT. Just thought I would share the visual. We love our west coast weather!

This was on our walk in town. Such a great idea!

Back at our boat we were greeted by the locals.

Friday, June 21. We moved to the Hudson River Maritime Museum and learned about the famous Hudson River vessel the Mary Powell. The Hudson River Maritime Museum (HRMM) was established in 1979 and preserves, interprets, and celebrates the maritime history, traditions, industries, and communities of the Hudson River and its tributaries.

Still hot outside—yeah we had to do this.

We took a walk and these two were either fighting or courting… not sure.

Church along our walk—our phones said there would be a thunderstorm…..

We made it back to the boat right before the rain hit.

Saturday, June 22. A fellow looper took our photo as they cruised by.

We left the dock at the museum and headed up the Hudson to Donovan Shady Harbor.

This is the Hudson Athens Lighthouse.

We arrived at Donovan’s Shady Harbor just when the sky opened up! This marina is just outside New Baltimore, NY.

After the rain we enjoyed a dinner at the onsite restaurant. This tug and barge combo shows how calm the river was and the day turned into.

Sunday, June 23. We stayed one more night as the wind picked up earlier. Our next destination would be Albany, NY.
